CKQC038: Piano scale practice using the Musiclock iPad app

Musiclock is a wonderful app for piano scale practice. It’s basically a backing track app with different styles of music and a huge range of different scales.

The music in Musiclock actually sounds cool, and the app looks beautiful. This is important when you’re working with teens and tweens!

I love using this app for scale review during our buddy time. Having a track like this to play along to means that two students can stay together, and it also makes it easier for them to self-correct.

I always let my students choose the order of the scales and the track that we use, and I try not to count them in unless they’re really struggling to play together.

These little touches, and getting them to navigate the app themselves, all mean that it will be easier for them to use this in their practice at home. The more independent they are, the better.

What are quick clips?

Colourful Keys Quick Clips are all about giving you a taste of what my lessons are actually like – in action.

I certainly don’t claim to be an expert, and I don’t have all the answers. I just know how much seeing real teaching with real students has helped me to grow and improve as a teacher.

Let me know what you think!

I hope you got some inspiration from this Colourful Keys Quick Clip. If you have any thoughts or questions, be sure to ask them in the Vibrant Music Studio Teachers group on Facebook or in the comments here, and do make sure to subscribe to my emails and YouTube channel to get notified when a new quick clip is published.

If you want more and extended clips of my teaching, be sure to check out the Vibrant Music Teaching library. There’s tons more like this as well as a whole library of teaching games to boot.

  1. I love using Musiclock for scales but discovered that I could have the students improvise using the scale they are playing. So now I have all my students do an improv over the background after they play the scale the regular way. It’s really fun!
