Adults piano students are very welcome. Whether you’re starting piano studies for the first time, or finally returning to piano lessons after years of absence – Colourful Keys is the place for you.
We focus on making the music learning process a completely enjoyable and immediately rewarding experience. You can have fun playing piano straight away, and make the music you want to make.
Playing the piano is a great hobby, it can be challenging at times, but with the right attitude, anyone can learn to play. I’m seeing more and more demand for adult piano lessons. In fact, adult piano lessons have become something of a speciality of ours!
All Genres of Music
While we of course make sure that we cover all the basics and technical elements that you need to play successfully, this does not mean that piano lessons need to be dull. You don’t need to spend weeks playing ‘Hot Cross Buns’, and your ultimate goal doesn’t need to be playing a full Mozart sonata…
If you love Mozart that’s great! But if you just want to play great Beatles arrangements, or jazz standards, or accompany your local choir; that’s awesome too! Whatever your individual goals are at the piano, your lessons will be designed around you.
“Nicola facilitated me in being able to play something of recognition after my very first lesson….what a great start, very encouraging! I was very happy with my choice.
I took up music later in life (38) and struggled with the very basics. Nicola is patient, understanding, encouraging and a very skilled teacher. Very glad to be working with her.”
-Jen, Adult piano student at Colourful Keys
Lesson Length
We recommend at least 45 minute weekly lessons for adult piano students. Some adults who have solid skills already and just want a weekly check-in prefer 30-minute lessons but I only recommend this for those intermediate/advanced students.
As an adult student, you will probably like having the time to process the information. This way you can feel confident to tackle the material covered during practise time at home.
The longer lesson length also allows us to explore more diverse music and for you to progress more quickly and play the music you really want to.
Practising
Playing music is a completely new skill, it’s similar to learning a new language and a new craft all wrapped into one, and requires fine motor skills from each of your fingers in a way that very few other things do. This all takes practice. It is completely manageable when be taken step by step, but it does require a long term commitment.
We completely understand that it is not as easy for adults to accommodate regular practise time, work, family and just general life can get in the way from time to time. If there is a week that it just wasn’t possible to practise, I don’t want you to feel guilty when you come into your lessons!
We won’t try to make you feel bad about not practising one week. We can just spend that lesson working through the material together and use it as a guided practice session.
