Vibrant vibrant vibrant music teaching proven and practical tips strategies than ideas for music teachers.

Welcome to episode 60 of the vibrant music teaching podcast. I’m Nicola Cantan and this is day four of the studio business cleanse.

Welcome back, beautiful teachers. I hope you’ve been enjoying the cleanse journey so far. We’ve looked at who you’re teaching or why you’re teaching and your teaching superpower in the first three days. And this is day four where we’re looking at showing off a little bit showing off your studio and the benefits of being part of it. If you haven’t got your workbook yet and you want to catch up you can listen to the previous podcasts and download the workbook by going to vibrantmusicteaching.com/cleanse. This is a totally free challenge. So just jump over there grab your worksheets so you can follow along and make the most of it. Today as I say we’re looking at showing off or in other words your marketing and the first thing I want you to look at is from the standpoint of your superpower. So first of all make sure you’ve done day three and done the exercises and find your superpower. And then I want you to think about the actual features of your studio the stuff that you do and the stuff that you have. So first of all think about your superpower perhaps write about it on a big sheet and have it in front of you while you think about things you might want to add to your studio or emphasize more. And in a different way I’ll give you some examples of what features you might like to have. Some studios have a tech lab where they have an iPod station or a computer station or both or maybe a full DSW station where their students input their compositions could be basic or could be extensive.

But if you have that or if you’re going to add that or reasons to do with what you want to stand out for then that’s gonna be something you want to highlight in your marketing. Maybe you have a games library. That’s something I have in my studio. Well I kind of have to write. I have one that’s actually in the studio space that already looks pretty big to students. They’re like wow you’ve so many games and I’m like you have no idea. Then I have the games in my office which take up a huge bookshelf because of course I have every copy a copy of every game inside vibrant music teaching and so I have multiple copies. So there’s a lot of games in my life which I love but my games library is something that I would highlight in my marketing to show that that’s a part of my studio that that’s part of what makes us different and that students can even take them home and all of that fun stuff. If one of your teaching superpowers was about performances and that you have a strong emphasis on performing and run tons of recitals every year that’s going to be something you want to celebrate and highlight.

So if you run more than the average you know more than two or three maybe five maybe 10 recitals a year then that’s something you’re going to want to emphasize.

Maybe you have an arts center in your studio maybe you have a drawing corner or you make a strong connection between music and visual arts and maybe you do a big composition project like me every March to April time. I do a big composition project and my students get their pieces notated and we even sometimes publish a book of them. So that’s something I would have photos of on my Web site. Maybe you have a strong focus on including parents in your music lessons. If you’re after parents who want really great fantastic competitive results for their children there need to be heavily involved and they’re going to need to be ready for that. So if that’s the case you could advertise that you have parents days the parents always sitting on lessons or that you have special weeks and special trainings for them because that conveys two things it’s going to attract the people the parents that want to be heavily involved. And it’s going to turn people away who don’t want to be and you don’t want the people who don’t want to be heavily involved. If that’s the focus of your studio or maybe you have that focus on technique and one of the things that you talk about in your marketing is that you have side by side grand piano so that you can fully show and fully demonstrate everything and sort of relay back and forth with your student. Right. So once you’ve decided the features that are most special on the benefits of your studio that show off your superpower because you can talk about it directly but you can also show it in what you do. So once you’ve decided what features show off your superpower and what makes your studio special that’s when you can start to think about where it goes.

And I want you to think about where you’re currently doing your marketing at this stage and what’s working the best for you so that you can put your most effort and convey your superpower clearly and prioritize the areas where you’re having a bigger impact where you’re actually attracting students.

So there’s space in the workbook there to mark in what you’re currently doing to attract new students. Such as your Web site your Facebook page. Facebook groups I know many teachers will go into local groups where they’re allowed to advertise their lessons or Instagram efforts or online listing sites like The Yellow Pages or gum tree or Craig’s List. Places like that next door. Those kinds of listing sites.

Or maybe you put out flyers and posters around town or on particular bulletin boards or in local schools or preschools if you’re allowed.

If you want more marketing ideas and there is space to add other things that you do that are outside of my list there. If you want more ideas for marketing though I suggest you read my post about this. It’s a colorful case dot I slash marketing predictably and there’ll be a link to that in the show notes if you need it.

So make a list of what you’re doing but far more importantly make it a list of what is working. Which one of these is actually having the biggest impact. And if you’re not sure. I said highly suggest that you add a line to your enrollment forms or your registration forms right now that ask people where they heard about you or what made them want to join your studio. I know many teachers will say oh it’s all word of mouth but outside of word of mouth because you can’t really control that other than being a fantastic teacher and of course that’ll happen organically with time that people will spread the word. If you are but a you want to consider your marketing more from the perspective of those that don’t know about you because there is sort of eventually an end point to most word of mouth marketing you will hit a dead end and maybe you will need more students outside of that to consider which ones are working and put your effort there into conveying your superpower through what you show from your studio in your workbooks you’ll see two home pages actually I’ve given you screenshots of my home page which you can see live in person.

A colorful case study and also a teacher called Jana Karlsson who has a studio that’s a group teaching studio and you can see the different styles of the two home pages and what they highlight. It isn’t about those being the examples of exactly what you should do. It’s about looking with fresh eyes. At your website at your Facebook page page at whatever is most effective to you and going OK with that call. My three ideal words to mind from day 3 Would it make people think I have this superpower that I have. Would it show them how my studio is different from other people. Those are the questions you want to ask yourself. When you look at all of your marketing efforts but especially the ones that are working the best right the places where people are actually finding you. You should be putting your best foot forward. One final task I have for you today which is a way to carry all of this momentum forward and keep thinking about this stuff as you tweak marketing efforts as you change what you’re doing in your studio and the new features you’re adding in the new events on your calendar. I want you to write your three words your three ideal words that people would use to describe you and your super power on a piece of paper and stick it up on the wall.

Put it on a poster that sits on your computer. Put it on your mirror. Put it in a frame. Whatever you prefer but put it up somewhere where you’ll regularly see it and you can come back to that thought when you’re considering making decisions.

You know you can start thinking more well does this do that. Is this going to move me closer to being the most prestigious studio in town the most fun studio in town. Whatever you want to be whatever way you want people to describe you always consider the decisions you’re making from that perspective. That’s it. That’s your final challenge for day four. We’ll be back here for the final day tomorrow.

Day five of our cleanse. I’m so excited to have you back here again. So go for it. Take a look at your marketing and I’ll see you back here tomorrow. Bye for now.
