Vibrant vibrant vibrant music teaching proven and practical tips strategies than ideas for music teachers.

You’re listening to episode 54 of the vibrant music teaching podcast. I’m Nicholas Cantan. And in this episode I’m giving you a sneak peek inside my piano para booster course.

Welcome beautiful teachers in this episode what you’ll hear is an excerpt from my piano power booster course. This is the complete lesson one. So by listening through to this you won’t have the PDF have to go with this if you’re not a member but as a podcast listener I wanted to give you this taste so that you can get a sense of what the course is like and also try some of these ideas. The main idea introduced in this first lesson is this major and minor improv and you can absolutely take that and use it straight away and have some success with your early intermediate students to explore and introduce minor keys for the first time perhaps. So you’re going to hear the complete lesson from the piano power booster 3. If you’re not familiar with what this piano power booster idea is. These are my But The Pieces plans from inside the vibrant music teaching site and they take you through improvisation theory games and fun and creative activities that you can use alongside a method book or any other repertoire to make sure your students have a well rounded curriculum. These courses are 40 weeks long. They have full lesson plan PDF and everything is included that you would need these all available for you to print on the vibrant music teaching site and there are videos to walk you through each one.

So let’s listen in on that first lesson and get inspired by this major and minor improv idea as well as the other games and activities included.

Hey there welcome to piano power booster 3. Lesson 1. We’re going to get going with the poster activity poster conductor activity. So this is using the solfa posters you should have them up on your wall or on the back of a door like me or on the floor, laid out. If you’ve nowhere to put things up and you’re going to use the full major scale point to the posters as you go through to direct you and your student or students what to saying and then let them have a go at directing as well so they can decide what you’re going to sing by pointing to posters along the way. Then we’re going to do a major minor improvisation. So in piano power booster one and two together we explored the full set of all 12 major scales and major keys and we’ve explored the idea of minors in terms of chords and stuff like that but in piano power booster 3. That’s where we’re really diving into the minors. And we’re gonna start off with this improvisation activity that explores the relationship between the two. So first you’re going to improvise together in C major. You can use this accompaniment or make up your own totally fine.

A few times in the negations.

That’s C Major. They improvise with you. They’re really used to that process of improvising in different keys. They’re gonna use only the white keys because it’s a major piece of cake. Easy peasy now. Improvise together with them again. Tell them that you’re still using all the white keys. Same keys in this one. No sharps no flats but the feeling of the whole note is going to change. And can they identify which one it is as you play. Tell them you’re going to ask them at the end. Have a guess which one is the new home note and then you play and you’re playing in a minor. Don’t tell them what you’re doing and they’re playing still just using the white keys as they were before. See if they get see if they get that it actually felt like home that time. Maybe they will maybe they won’t. Also ask them about the different mood and how it sounded different and felt different and then give a brief explanation depending on where your student is at. But we’re going to explore this over the coming weeks so don’t feel you have to go to too much depth here but just a brief explanation that the whole not this time was a and that this is a minor scale starting on LA from the major scale so it’s the same but they’re related to each other but one starts on DO one starts on LA and the home note changes so after that we’re going to play the game fishing lines which I have here.

So fishing lines is all about matching ledger line notes and the two clefs so the same notes say A B F in the bass clef in the treble clef and matching them up in a Go Fish style game and we’ve played that piano pair best or two so you’ll be familiar with it and have it at the ready too. And then lastly we’re going to do marching orders which you’ve done lots of times. At this stage in the piano part booster journey so marching orders where we hold up the different posters and we move around based on what note value is showing just print out the ones you need here you don’t need the full set or you probably already have these from the previous piano power booster. And again you don’t need the full set of jumbo note values. It’s an enormous set so just these ones put on some music. So doing those high knees and the marching and jumping and all of that fun stuff. Have fun and I’ll see you next week.
