CKQC041: Reviewing piano posture with young students

At the start of the new year, one of the first things we do is go over the piano posture or how to sit at the piano.

We start by swinging our arms around to make them free of tension, then practice lifting and dropping them so we can feel the freedom of movement. Then we move to the piano and review how to sit, what height they should be at and all that good stuff.

The second part of this is to make sure students have the same set up at home. I take a photo at this lesson that I send to the parents, and they’re asked to send me back a photo of the student at home so I can check they’re at the right height, have their feet firmly planted, etc. This also gives me an opportunity to make sure their home instrument is up to scratch.

What are quick clips?

Colourful Keys Quick Clips are all about giving you a taste of what my lessons are actually like – in action.

I certainly don’t claim to be an expert, and I don’t have all the answers. I just know how much seeing real teaching with real students has helped me to grow and improve as a teacher.

Let me know what you think!

I hope you had fun watching this Colourful Keys Quick Clip. If you have any thoughts or questions, be sure to ask them in the Vibrant Music Studio Teachers group on Facebook or in the comments here, and do make sure to subscribe to my emails and YouTube channel to get notified when a new quick clip is published.

If you want more and extended clips of my teaching, be sure to check out the Vibrant Music Teaching library. There’s tons more like this as well as a whole library of teaching games to boot.
