CKQC024: Major chord practice with the iReal Pro app

Several of my students have been focussing on chord work this semester and iReal Pro (available on Apple and Android) has come in really handy.

This app creates backing tracks in tons of different styles, based on chord charts which you can download or create for yourself. You can adjust the volume of different instruments and change the tempo too. It’s a fantastic resource.

As you’ll see, this student is a hoot to teach! This exercise isn’t easy for her, but she tackles it well and with enthusiasm.

This chord progression uses only white key major chords. The next challenge from here is to play all the chords chromatically, and then following the circle of fifths.

After all those, my student will have achieved Chord Apprentice level and will get a coveted spot on my challenge board.

What are quick clips?

Colourful Keys Quick Clips are all about giving you a taste of what my lessons are actually like – in action.

I certainly don’t claim to be an expert, and I don’t have all the answers. I just know how much seeing real teaching with real students has helped me to grow and improve as a teacher.

Let me know what you think!

I hope you enjoyed this Colourful Keys Quick Clip. If you have any thoughts or questions, be sure to ask them in the Vibrant Music Studio Teachers group on Facebook or in the comments here, and do make sure to subscribe to my emails and YouTube channel to get notified when a new quick clip is published.

If you want more and extended clips of my teaching, be sure to check out the Vibrant Music Teaching library. There’s tons more like this as well as a whole library of teaching games to boot.

  1. Hi Nicola

I have the I real pro app but like you say, it’s a bit intimidating to use! Can you explain how you downloaded the chord chart for the major chords? I know I could write my own but I’m not sure how the search facility works on the app-it seems to search google instead??
    Thanks!
