CKQC006: The clefs and first landmark notes on the floor staff

This is video number six in the series: Colourful Keys Quick Clips. You can catch all the quick clips published so far by clicking here.

Different methods of note reading work for different students. But for most students, I think landmark notes provide the best starting point.

In this video, we’re discussing the landmark note bass F. I make this more memorable by pointing out the letter F hidden inside the bass clef.

After this short clip, we went on to talk about the G shape within the treble clef and landmark note treble G. The next three landmarks I’ll teach are the three Cs, middle, bass and treble.

These five notes provide a fantastic start to grand staff navigation for beginners and for now, it’s all they need.

Later on in their studies we’ll do more drilling and games to reinforce instant note identification but these few notes and the intervals are the key ingredients to beginning reading.

What are quick clips?

Colourful Keys Quick Clips are all about giving you a taste of what my lessons are actually like – in action.

I certainly don’t claim to be an expert, and I don’t have all the answers. I just know how much seeing real teaching with real students has helped me to grow and improve as a teacher.
