CKQC002: Fun music theory with gamified time signatures

This video is the second in the new series, Colourful Keys Quick Clips.

As many of you know, I’m big on games, and today I want to give you a taste of what it’s like to teach music theory through games.

This is what music theory should look like in all teaching studios!

In this quick clip, two of my students are getting to try out ‘Honk Time!’ for the first time. This is a super fun, fast paced game for practicing basic time signatures that always elicits many giggles. 🙂

In the fun music theory game, students have to identify the incorrect rhythms that don’t match the time signature by shouting “HONK!” before the other player. The winner is the one with the most cards at the end.

Yes, this game gets loud but I think you’ll see how worth it is when students are this enthusiastic about time signature practice. Have you ever seen students love adding up beats this much?!

Notice how closely they’re watching each others’ cards too – double the learning. 😉

What are quick clips?

Colourful Keys Quick Clips are all about giving you a taste of what my lessons are actually like – in action.

I certainly don’t claim to be an expert, and I don’t have all the answers. I just know how much seeing real teaching with real students has helped me to grow and improve as a teacher.

Let me know what you think!

I hope you had fun watching this Colourful Keys Quick Clip. If you have any thoughts or questions, be sure to ask them in the Vibrant Music Studio Teachers group on Facebook or in the comments here, and do make sure to subscribe to my emails and YouTube channel to get notified when a new quick clip is published.

If you want more and extended clips of my teaching, be sure to check out the Vibrant Music Teaching library. There’s tons more like this as well as a whole library of teaching games to boot.
