Spell-a-staff Grand Staff Game for Practicing Note Names

Playing a grand staff game is a fantastic way to accelerate piano student progress. Children learn best through play. Games allow them to understand music concepts on a deeper level.

When we practice music theory concepts through games students learn more thoroughly. They also have more fun, and are more likely to engage with the learning process.

Spell-a-Staff is a fun grand staff game for elementary to early intermediate piano students. Practice note identification by writing in as many words as you can! Great for use in private lessons against the clock, or in group lessons as teams.

Spell a Staff Directions

For 1 player

  • Set a countdown for 2 minutes.
  • Pick cards at random from the bag and draw them on a grand staff card (in the correct clef).
  • Draw as many words as you can! When the 2 minutes are up double check that the cards are correct, then count them. Try to beat your score next time!

For 2-4 players

  • Set a countdown for 2 minutes.
  • Pick cards at random from the bag and draw them on a grand staff card (in the correct clef).
  • Draw as many words as you can! When the 2 minutes are up double check that the cards are correct, then count them.
  • The player with the most correct grand staff words wins!
