Musical Meander – Note Value and Key Name Review Game

I have a general rule with my young students (they don’t know it’s a rule, I don’t use that word much!) that if they behave well during a lesson, we play a game for the last five minutes.

My lessons are full of games really, but in this case I mean a game we play sitting on the floor, away from the piano bench. You could call this the “theory” segment of the lesson…but that’s another word I don’t really use with kids! Musical Meander   This is a new game I just created last week, suitable for elementary level students. Included in the pdf is the A4 game board and two different sets of cards, one to review key names and one to review note values. Also included is the title page which I printed on a A4 label for the envelope I keep this game in, feel free not to print that page, it really is just to help keep everything organised. musical-meander-preview

  Assembly:

1. Download musical meander.

2. Print out the game board (page 1), laminate if possible.

3. Print the cards (pages 2,3,4&5) double sided. Just print pages 2 and 4 if you want to leave the backs plain.

4. Cut the cards apart along the lines. Laminate if possible.

Game Play:

1. Choose either rhythm cards, key cards, or a mix of the two!

2. Take turns to draw a cards and either go to that letter if it’s a key, or move that number of spaces if it’s a note value.

  1. Can you provide more details about the game you created for elementary level students? How does the game work, and how does it help students review key names and note values in a fun and engaging way? Additionally, could you share some of the benefits you’ve observed in using this game in your teaching or with students who have played it?
