At Colourful Keys, I teach both group lessons and individual lessons. All lessons include the creative elements such as composition, improvisation, games based learning alongside traditional music reading. The lesson structure you choose comes down to personal preference, learning style and learning goals.
Young beginners can start in one of the three piano groups:
- Rhythm Rockstars for 5 & 6 year olds
- Melody Maestros for 7 & 8 year olds
- Harmony Heroes for 9 & 10 year olds
These group lessons are a super fun way to begin piano studies. Groups are kept small with 3-4 children in each class, so your child is receiving the attention they need while getting all the benefits of group instruction.
In these group classes I teach using technology, collaboration, games and movement based rhythm activities. To find out more and see if group lessons at Colourful Keys might be right for your child click here.
Students at Colourful Keys can also choose to begin their piano journey in one-on-one lessons. Individual piano lessons have been the standard format for many years, and I still believe they’re the best fit for some children and for all adult piano students.
If your child is particularly shy or will learn at a different pace than most children then individual lessons may be a better fit for them.
I offer individual piano lessons from the age of three and a half up, click here to find out about lessons for early beginners.
“You can see the work she does to prepare for a class. If you want someone who is completely focused on your child and willing to teach them at their own pace then she is definitely the teacher for you. Her highly organised approach is very refreshing.”
-Laura, Parent of piano student at Colourful Keys
There are two concerts each year which all my piano students are welcome to participate in. I keep these concerts relaxed and informal. I make sure all my students are confident and prepared so they can have a positive performance experience.
Piano students need an instrument to practice on at home. This can be a piano, digital piano or keyboard.
I understand that you may not want to invest in a high quality instrument to start out with. This is why I offer rental options to new students. Beginning students can rent a weighted keyboard for €100 per term (group students) or €200 per semester (one-on-one students).
If you’re looking to get a new piano or keyboard, take a look at my piano/keyboard buying guide to help you make an informed decision.
Even parents who never learnt piano themselves can help their children practise. One of the biggest ways you can help as a parent is by establishing a practise routine. See the ‘Parent’s Guide to Piano Practise’ for more information on how you can help your child to practise in between piano lessons.
Special Needs & Learning Difficulties
I’m happy to accommodate students with special needs or learning difficulties. Lessons are always tailored towards the individual, so I can design lessons around any learning style.
Many students with special needs have benefited from my incorporation of:
- Games based learning
- Easy to follow lesson structure
- Rote teaching
- Colour coding Improvisation
I also use a wide range of different books and materials. I put a great deal of thought into matching the method to each student, not making the student fit the method.
Exams are completely optional. They can be a great motivator, however I don’t like for students to be just working from one to the next, playing nothing but exam pieces for months on end.
I believe that piano students should be learning lots of varied repertoire, in different genres and at different levels at all times. This makes for a happier, more confident student with strong sight-reading skills and an understanding of musicianship.
I will generally only suggest an exam level that can be successfully prepared for in about 3-4 months. This means that students (and families listening to them practice!) don’t get sick of the music before the exam date, and it can be an enjoyable, confidence building experience. I have never had a student fail an exam, and almost all achieve honours grades or above, which is an excellent self-esteem boost!
