Diatonic Dominoes – Note Name and Note Value Game for Piano Students

Diatonic Dominoes is a fun note name and note value game for 2-4 players. There are two sides to my dominoes one for note value practice and one for note name practice.

The blue side matches notes on the grand staff with letters, and the yellow side matches note values (including tied notes) of up to 6 beats.

How to Play

  • Choose whether to play the note name or note value game with the blue or yellow side of tiles.
  • If playing with 2 players, deal 7 dominoes to each player. If playing with 3/4 players deal 5 dominoes to each player.
  • The first player puts down a domino in the centre of the table.
  • Players then take turns to place a matching domino on the open end of a domino on the table.
  • If the domino is a double it should be placed vertically. A blank tile can be used anywhere.
  • If a player cannot go, they must pick a new tile from the “boneyard” (spare tiles) until they can play.
  • The winner is the one to get rid of all their tiles, or the one with the least number of tiles when no more plays can be made.

Hope you like this game, my students and I have had a super time playing it together! Any questions, just leave them in the comments and I’ll get back to you asap.

Do you need more ways to practice note values?

Try the Rhythm Vocab Cards here, or the Proportional Rhythm Cards here. Both these sets of cards are adaptable to whatever way you teach rhythm and there’s tons of fun to be had with them. 😉

  1. I made my own set before I found your blog here (from Joy Morin’s)… Yours look so professional, being done on computer. Also, I think I made mine too hard. There’s too much thinking and not quite enough fun! Maybe I’ll download your stickers and do another set LOL…
